Way to Blue: An Introduction to Nick Drake [Remaster] by Nick Dra

Personnel: Nick Drake (vocals, acoustic guitar, piano); Richard Thompson (guitar); Clare Lowther (cello); Ray Warleigh (alto saxophone); John Cale (piano, organ); Chris McGregor, Paul Harris (piano); Dave Pegg, Ed Carter, Danny Thompson (bass); Dave Mattacks, Mike Kowalski (drums); Rocki Dzidzornu (congas); Pat Arnold, Doris Troy (background vocals). Includes liner notes by Joe Boyd. WAY TO BLUE: AN INTRODUCTION TO NICK DRAKE is the perfect title for this well-compiled collection that exemplifies the full breadth of Drake's work. From the lush orchestrations of FIVE LEAVES LEFT and BRYTER LAYTER to the sparse acoustic guitar work of PINK MOON and the posthumous TIME OF NO REPLY, WAY TO BLUE features a handful of songs from each album, compiled and sequenced by Drake's friend and producer Joe Boyd. Opening with the gorgeous "Cello Song," the album moves from BRYTER LAYTER's "Hazey Jane I" to the title track, which features Drake's delicate vocals alone over a symphonic swell. Also included are the hauntin...

Paradise Theater by Styx

Personnel: James Young , Tommy Shaw (vocals, guitar); Dennis DeYoung (vocals, keyboards); Chuck Panozzo (vocals, bass guitar); John Panozzo (vocals, drums, percussion); Steve Eisen (saxophone); Mark Ohlson, Mike Halpin, John Haynor, Billy Simpson, Dan Barber (horns). Recording information: Pumpkin Studios, Oak Lawn, IL; Universal Recording. Arranger: Styx. PARADISE THEATER was arguably the last great Styx album, as the rift between Dennis DeYoung's balladry and the more hard-hitting approach of James Young and Tommy Shaw hadn't yet wreaked havoc on the group's output. There's a vague concept about the tearing down of an old theater, but as with most concept albums, the songs are the important thing. "Rockin' The Paradise" is one of the group's most effective rockers and most substantial group efforts (its one of the few songs written by all three of the band's composers). Tommy Shaw brings his pop sensibilities to the fore on the ridiculously catchy (and hugely successful) "Too Much Time on My Hands," wh...

Blind Melon by Blind Melon

Blind Melon: Shannon Hoon (vocals); Thomas Rogers Stevens, Christopher Thorn (guitar); Brad Smith (bass); Glen Graham (drums). Additional personnel: Sabbi Kahn (sarangi). Recorded at London Bridge Studios, Seattle, Washington in February 1992. Given the preponderance of synthesizers and samples on contemporary radio outlets, fans of guitar bands must be feeling a little let down, when along comes a Blind Melon. BLIND MELON puts a contemporary slant on metal, blues and assorted psychedelia without sounding lost in the past. Nevertheless, their deep roots in classic FM sounds help define their appeal, not unlike that of a Pearl Jam. Vocalist Hoon howls at the moon in the best tradition of Robert Plant, Ozzy Osbourne and Axl Rose, while the Glen Graham-Brad Smith rhythm team moves convincingly from rock thrash ("Paper Scratcher") to funk ("Seed To A Tree") and even some country and eastern sounds ("Holyman," "Sleepyhouse"). But the heart and soul of BLIND MELON are the loose spacey exchanges between guitari...

Audio Mixer: Dave O'Donnell . Recording information: Right Track Studios, New York, NY; The Shire Studio, NY. Photographers: Cynthia Cincotti; Neil Katz; Bruce Weber. Arrangers: Peter Cincotti; Mark McLean. As a teenage piano-and-vocal prodigy, Peter Cincotti was, predictably, subject to criticisms of being nothing more than a pale imitation of his influences. On his second full-length album, ON THE MOON, however, the New York City native exhibits the type of quiet confidence that normally takes decades to develop. Unlike many talented youngsters, Cincotti is ...

2112 [Slimline] by Rush

Rush: Alex Lifeson (guitar); Geddy Lee (bass, vocals); Neal Peart (drums). Additional personnel: Hugh Syme (keyboards). Recorded at Toronto Sound Studios, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Ultradiscs are mastered from the original master tapes using Mobile Fidelity's proprietary mastering technique, then plated with 24 karat gold and housed in a stress-resistant lift-lock jewel box. Rush: Geddy Lee (vocals, bass instrument); Alex Lifeson (guitar); Neil Peart (percussion). Arrangers: Rush; Terry Brown. 2112 is archetypal high-concept heavy/art-rock, featuring an interconnected suite of songs and a futuristic science fiction-inspired lyrical theme (courtesy of drummer/sole lyricist Neil Peart). When it came to '70s sci fi rock epics these guys were capable of giving Hawkwind and Jefferson Starship a run for their money. The first half of the album features "2112" proper, a series of interrelated tunes that paint a portrait of a 1984/Brave New World-style future, where music and emotion are outlawed. Ultimately, ou...

Duper Sessions by Sondre Lerche and the Faces Down

Personnel: Sondre Lerche (vocals, guitar); Jorgen Tr?en (percussion); Faces Down Quartet. Norwegian indie-pop sensation Sondre Lerche moves in a new direction for his 2006 release DUPER SESSIONS. Devoted fans looking for more of the well-crafted chamber pop of TWO WAY MONOLOGUE might be taken aback to know that DUPER SESSIONS is light, swinging, and very jazzy. Yet all the hallmarks of Lerche's work are present: tight songcraft, clever lyrics, memorable melodies. Lerche's clear croon is well-suited to the style, as songs like "(You Knocked Me) Off My Feet" prove, while the less overtly jazz-oriented material is invigorated by the distinctive instrumentation and arrangements. Ever the experimentalist, Lerche turns in jazzy renditions of tunes by Prefab Sprout and Elvis Costello, so that his listeners--though relaxed by the album's smooth swing--are playfully kept on their toes.

Transcendence [Bonus Track] [Digipak] by Crimson Glory

Crimson Glory: Midnight (vocals); Jon Drenning, Ben Jackson (guitar); Jeff Lords (bass); Dana Burnell (drums). Personnel: Jon Drenning (guitar); Jim Ward Morris (Synclavier, background vocals); Jeff Lords (bass guitar); Dana Burnell (drums); Tom Morris (background vocals). Audio Mixer: Jim Ward Morris. Photographer: Gary Sweetman. Unjustly qualified as one of the '80s best American-made progressive metal albums, Crimson Glory's Transcendence is actually one of the decade's best pure metal albums by an American band, period. Sure, they shared many sonic traits with fellow '80s metal bands like Queensr?che and Fates Warning, but Crimson Glory's songwriting was relatively straightforward by comparison, and generally shied away from ultra-complex prog rock arrangements employed by their peers. In fact, barnstormers like "Lady of Winter" and "Red Sharks" are almost ordinary in their no-frills headbanging intensity, and even the band's more "progressive" material, such as the ambitious "Burning Bridges" and th...

Keepers: Greatest Hits by Tracy Byrd

Personnel includes: Tracy Byrd (vocals); Randy Scruggs (acoustic guitar); Larry Byrom (electric guitar); Robby Turner (steel guitar); Aubrey Haynie (fiddle); John Barlow Jarvis (piano); Michael Rhodes (bass); Owen Hale (drums, percussion); Curtis Young, John Wesley Ryles (background vocals). Engineers include: Steve Marcantonio. Includes liner notes by Robert K. Oermann. Byrd's first hits collection shows off his two main strengths--romantic ballads and light-hearted dance numbers--to full effect. The album includes a sampling from each of Byrd's five albums, all delivered in the deep, resonant voice that made him a major country star of the '90s. On the fun side, you'll find Byrd's goofy live favorite "Watermelon Crawl," the hilarious "Lifestyles of the Not So Rich & Famous," the booming "Big Love" and the title track of his album I'M FROM THE COUNTRY. Byrd's skills as a romantic crooner are on display in "Love Lessons," the well-written "Heaven In My Woman's Eyes," his version of Johnny Paycheck's "Som...

You Can't See Me [PA] * by John Cena

Personnel: Kristin Ezbicki (vocals, guitar, flute); Freakas, Chaos (scratches). Additional personnel: Esoteric , Bumpy Knuckles. Audio Mixers: Andre Deborge; Freakas; Chaos. Recording information: Basscamp Studios; Lobo Recording Studios. It's easy to dismiss athletes who claim to be musicians, particularly if said jocks are professional wrestlers. But World Wrestling Entertainment grappler John Cena's recording debut, YOU CAN'T SEE ME, is an impressive foray into the world of hip-hop. Rap fan Cena boasts an organic flow that seems far beyond any shtick concocted during a marketing session. Backed by Tha Trademarc, he bobs and weaves among funky samples of KRS-One, Killah Priest, and Eric Clapton throughout the home-city shout-out "Beantown," and rocks a West Coast groove on the thumping "Summer Flings." The WWE champ also holds his own working alongside rap legend Freddie Foxxx (AKA Bumpy Knuckles) on the rubbery funk of "Flow Easy" and hard-edged "Bad, Bad Man." Carry It On, Songs of America's Working People by Mike Seeger/Pet

Personnel: Pete Seeger (vocals, acoustic guitar, banjo); Jane Sapp (vocals, piano); Arlen Roth (acoustic & electric guitars, bass); Fred Hellerman (synthesizer). Originally released as a double LP, this collection of classic work songs, union anthems, and ballads is both stirring as a political statement and fascinating as a historical overview of the role that music played in labor relations in the 19th and 20th centuries. Since before the days of Woody Guthrie, there's been a strong link between folk music and labor, and many of the songs here date from the early decades of the 20th century, when union busting and other anti-labor activities were commonplace. Though no longer quite so topical, anthems like "Popular Wobbly," "A Union Maid" and "I Am a Union Woman, Which Side Are You On?" still sound powerful alongside more recent songs like "No Mas Moveran (We Shall Not Be Moved)." Though Seeger gets the billing, it's the clear, expressive vocals of Jane Sapp that are the album's most striking feature.
